Starting a new school year can be exciting and nerve-wracking for children. Beyond the usual supplies like notebooks and backpacks, what truly matters is how prepared and confident a child feels walking into their classroom. For children impacted by foster care, this preparation can be especially challenging. Closet of Hope understands this and is hosting the 2026 Back-to-School Bash to help these children begin the school year with the tools and confidence they need to succeed.

New School Shoes on August 1

The event kicks off on Saturday, August 1, with a special shoe shopping day. Children and their caregivers will have the chance to visit Closet of Hope’s store and pick out a brand-new pair of school shoes. The Summerville Police Department will join the event, providing a supportive and welcoming environment.

Properly fitting shoes are more than just footwear; they provide comfort, support, and a boost of confidence. For many children, having new shoes helps them feel ready to face the school day and fit in with their peers. Because the supply of shoes is limited, families must register in advance and receive approval to participate. The event operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is essential.

School Supply Celebration on August 2

The celebration continues on Sunday, August 2, when families return for a day filled with back-to-school essentials and community support. Approved families can:

  • Shop for necessary school supplies like pencils, notebooks, and backpacks

  • Receive new socks to keep feet comfortable throughout the school year

  • Get a free haircut to start the year with a fresh look

  • Visit the children’s library to select books that encourage reading and learning

  • Enjoy a refreshing Tiki Shaved Ice treat to celebrate the upcoming school year

This day is designed to ensure children leave not only with supplies but also with excitement and confidence to tackle their new school year.

How to Register

Participation in the Back-to-School Bash requires advance registration and approval. Due to limited funding and supplies, families will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If your family is eligible, it is important to register as soon as possible to secure a spot.

Registration helps organizers prepare the right amount of supplies and ensure every child receives what they need.

  • Volunteer during the event to help families shop and enjoy the activities

  • Donate new school supplies, shoes, or funds to support the event

  • Spread the word to families who might benefit from the event

Every contribution helps children impacted by foster care start their school year with confidence and the tools to succeed.
